·  How do the charts work?

This is perhaps the most frequently asked question on InternetDJ. The charts are generated every Sunday night between 8pm and 9pm EST. During this time, every active song that has had listener activity within the prior week is given a rank. This rank is then used to provide a chart position for the overall chart and the genre-specific chart.

The rank is calculated using a propietary mathematical algorithm developed and refined by InternetDJ. While we will not disclose the exact methods used, we can share that we calculate the bayseian average for each song based on the ratings provided by members. Listens are also factored in, but are not nearly as important as ratings. The age of the song also has a factor. A song uploaded many years ago has a smaller chance in a high rank versus a song uploaded last week, even if there is renewed popularity for the older song. Most importantly, our algorithm takes the rating accuracy and longevity of each member who provided a song rating. For example, a "10" from a member who joined 3 years ago has a much greater weight than a "10" from a member who joined yesterday.

These methods, along with IP address tracking, help prevent fraud and encourage fairness in our system. We feel our algorithm is the best in the industry, and should be used to gauge how good a song is, as we measure quantitative results from peer musicians as well as overall popularity from listeners.
